All You Need to Know About the Bridal Bouquet

8

A symbol of beauty and elegance, the bridal bouquet is one of the most iconic elements of any wedding. But why exactly do brides carry this bouquet? What’s the significance of it? Well, we’re here to discuss just that.

These bouquets are more than mere accessories. It stands out as the wedding’s focal point, tells a story, and is one of the first things guests notice when the bride walks down the aisle to meet her groom at the altar.

A Quick Look at the History of the Wedding Hand Bouquet

The history of bridal bouquet dates back to aeons ago, where strong-smelling herbs and spices were used by Ancient Greeks and Romans to ward off bad luck and mask body odour during a wedding ceremony. Concurrently, these herbs and spices were also associated with new beginnings, purity and fertility. It was until the Victorian era that the herbs and spices were replaced by flowers. Popularised by Queen Victoria, more brides started to embrace flowers as an emblem of hope, loyalty, trust and undivided love. This age-old tradition has been carried on to the modern-day, and flowers continue to play a prominent role in weddings. Beyond symbolism, wedding hand bouquets were picked out by contemporary brides in Singapore and across the globe based on specific meaning and sentiment, or personal style and preferences.

Styling a Wedding Bouquet

When it comes to flower arrangement and styling, it is only common to be overwhelmed. As a general rule of thumb, here are some tips to note:

  • Choose your wedding dress before your bridal bouquet. This allows you to style your bouquet in a way that complements the colour palette and detail of your gown, instead of clashing with it. If your gown is sleek and perfectly lined, you might want to opt for a minimalist bouquet so that it doesn’t compete for the spotlight.
  • The shape and size of the bouquet matter – a lot. If you’re a petite bride, avoid going for over-dramatic bouquets as it might come off as visually overwhelming. Also, ensure that your bouquet is narrower than your waist, as you’d want to flaunt that killer figure of yours!
  • If you’re navigating through the special day on a tight budget, find out what flowers are in-season and consider those! By picking seasonal blooms, you’ll get more bang for your buck.
  • Consider your personal style preferences, and give your bridal bouquet a truly personal touch. Remember – there are no right or wrong when it comes to flower arrangements. At the end of the day, it has to reflect who you are.

How to Hold Your Bridal Bouquet

Now that you’ve got the beauty in your hand, the last thing you want is to find yourself gripping the bouquet awkwardly, with your shoulders all scrunched up – you want to walk down the aisle with poise and grace.

Hold your bouquet at your belly button area, at a 45-degree angle or wider. Make sure that your bouquet points towards your guests. It takes some serious practice in the mirror, but you’ll eventually get it right. Of course, don’t let the nerves get in the way on your special day!

Choosing the Right Florist for Your Bouquet

Having recognised the significance of the bridal bouquet, you’d want to find a florist that is reliable, and has the ability to communicate your vision tastefully. Always do your research, and look through portfolios. Lastly, communicate your design philosophy to your shortlisted florists, and bounce ideas off them.
